The most popular dental filling choices for addressing cavities and tooth decay are porcelain and composite resin fillings. In recent years, a fundamental shift has occurred in the material used for fillings. Metal fillings, which contain mercury, were the standard treatment for treating tooth decay for decades. After numerous studies showed that even small percentages of mercury could be harmful if inhaled or ingested, we decided to move away from silver amalgam/mercury fillings and offer our patients alternatives for their oral care.

Tooth-colored fillings that use porcelain or a composite resin material provide lasting results and are a safe alternative to metal fillings. They also offer numerous benefits for when you need a restoration to fix cavities and tooth decay. These benefits include:

SonicFill™ Composite System

In an effort to constantly improve the quality of our white dental fillings, we’ve recently switched to the SonicFill™ Composite System from Kerr Dental. Previously, our method for building white fillings was to incrementally build the fillings by layering the material on the tooth. That process, while producing successful long-lasting results, took multiple sessions, meaning extra time in the dental chair.

With the new SonicFill™ Composite System technology, we are able to place and set the entire restoration all at once. The composite filling is delivered with an ultrasonic hand piece which allows the material to flow into the prepared tooth. A laser is then used to uniformly cure the material up to a depth of 6 mm, ensuring consistent setting and bonding throughout the sealant. The benefits of this technology include:

• Placement of restoration in one setting

• Various shades available to match existing teeth

• Aesthetically-pleasing once polished

• Great for new areas of decay or replacing small to moderate sized silver fillings

• Strengthens tooth after bonded
