At Five Star Family Dental, we the best non surgical treatment available in dentistry today: The Perio Protect Method.  Not only do we offer this cutting edge technology to our Peoria patients, Dr. Vorperian, and his staff use the product as well.  We have always offered our patients conservative treatment options for gum disease, but never before did we have a way to control the underlying bacteria on a daily basis until now.  New research every month reinforces not only the importance of healthy gums to tooth retention and fresh breath.  But the health of your gums can have a huge impact on your overall systemic health, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

In 2003 the World health Organization published a comprehensive report on oral health showing that more than 80% of adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease, and most of these people are not even aware of it.

The symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums

  • Sensitive teeth

  • Obvious plaque, tartar or calculus

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Swollen, red or tender gums

  • Spaces developing between your teeth

  • Receding gums

  • Loose or mobile teeth

These symptoms are part of your body’s response to a bacterial infection in the gum tissue.  Most people simply ignore the symptoms, mainly because they cannot see the infections, even though they are quite serious.  If a person had an open bleeding wound on their leg or hand they would treat it immediately, thus the open wounds in your mouth should be treated as well.

Treatment is essential because gum disease is the most prominent cause of tooth loss and because research has linked oral bacterial infections to:

  • Type 2 Diabetes

  • Heart Disease

  • Blood clots and Strokes

  • Respiratory Disease

  • Preterm and Low Birth Weight Babies

How the Disease Starts

When bacteria, tartar, or food are not cleaned properly from the teeth, a community of bacteria called a biofilm can gather and cause infections in the spaces or pocket between teeth and the gum tissue.  As the infection grows, oxygen is depleted and more damaging anaerobic bacteria begin to dominate the area.  In an advanced stage of biofilm accumulation, clumps of bacteria detach from the biofilm in a “seeding” effect to form new infections.

Treatment Options

The most common way to treat oral bacteria is a professional cleaning procedure called scaling and root planning that physically removes the oral biofilm.  Unfortunately, bacteria are continually reintroduced into our mouth and biofilm can regenerate quite easily, thus it is difficult to control them between office visits.

The Perio Protect Method offers an additional technique designed to help you manage oral bacteria on a day to day basis.  Using a custom formed prescription tray, doctor prescribed medication can be placed into the periodontal pocket.  This tray is specifically designed to prevent the medication from being washed away too quickly.  Five Star Family’s Dentist Dr. Vorperian will prescribe the best medication for your condition as well as individualized treatment instructions.  For the majority of our patients, following the Perio Protect Method requires only a few minutes each day.

Our patients using the Perio Protect Method, find it to be a comfortable treatment option and also reported having additional beneficial side effects such as whiter teeth and fresher breath.

Protect Yourself

World renowned microbiologists worked recently at the University of Southern California using a scanning electron microscope to analyze and record images of bacteria in periodontal pockets before and after treatment with the Perio Protect Method.  The team of Scientists concluded that after 17 days of this treatment 99.8% of disease-causing bacteria were eliminated.  Gum disease can never be cured completely, but once tissue health has been restored the Perio Protect Method continues to provide the patient with management health.

Take advantage of this conservative treatment option backed by new and extensive research documenting its effectiveness.  Control your oral health in a way unavailable previously and avoid tooth loss or expensive gum surgery.
